NEW ORLEANS — Top Louisiana officials are sounding the alarm after 10
inmates escaped from the Orleans Justice Center early Friday — calling the incident one of the worst jail breaches in memory and demanding immediate accountability.

Three inmates, Kendall Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis have been captured so far. The others are still on the run.

    ‘Unprecedented’: DA Jason Williams outraged
New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams, who personally prosecuted
one of the inmates still at large, called the jailbreak “absurd.”

"I think it's safe to say I'm angry. Um, this is absurd. This is an unprecedented jailbreak. I don't remember a single time in my lifetime in
any American city where 11 people have been able to escape at one time,
um. These individuals are not there for minor crimes. I personally
prosecuted one of those individuals, and I asked the jury to give him a
    life sentence," said D.A. Williams.

"I know for a fact that there is evidence that he was threatening
witnesses to prevent his trial from going forward, and so the fact that he
is now one of these escapees angers me. Um, I don't, I don't understand
how it is feasible that it could have occurred."

    Gov. Landry: “You are next.”
Governor Jeff Landry issued a blunt warning on social media just hours
after the public was alerted to the escape:

"If you think this will fly in Louisiana, you are DEAD WRONG. Every single
one of you will be caught," said Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry in a post
    on social media.

    He later posted:

"Thank you to Troop NOLA for their diligence and speed in apprehending the first escapee. To the other 10: YOU ARE NEXT!" Landry posted.

    City Councilmembers slam late notification

Councilmember Joe Giarrusso also said the escape required “all hands on
deck,” from NOPD and state police to federal agencies.

“I think at this point this is an all hands on deck situation and so you
want to maximize all of your partners, and that means as we've done after January 1 and for other events in the city, we're going to use the
sheriff's office, NOPD, state police, our federal partners, and then as
you're pointing out, the technology that you have available to you. Well,
this is a serious issue,” said City Councilmember Joe Giarrusso in an
interview with WWL Louisiana’s Katie Moore.

“It is a serious second crime that has been committed by people, and so
you want to use the tools that you have at your disposal to make things
safe for people who are just walking around the city right now.”

City Councilmember Helena Moreno said she was “appalled” that law
enforcement didn’t learn about the escape until more than an hour and a
    half after the morning headcount.

"Honestly, like I just can't even believe this, and you know, 11 people
escape, and what I'm so just frustrated and appalled about is the lack of notification, timely notification to our law enforcement. um, so NOPD,
state police, they weren't notified for at least an hour and a half after
this had happened, and so they were just incredibly frustrated at the situation, and when I was coming to where we're at right now," said
    Moreno.

"That to me is like inexcusable. One of the things that you know, I
started immediately looking at is I thought that there was already a law
that required this type of immediate notification, but what I realized is
that this law is only applicable to juvenile offenders. So I called the
author of this bill, who did the one for juvenile offenders, and I'm like,
hey, I don't know what you need to do with this this this needs to be
fixed. There needs to be a law that requires," Moreno explained.

AG Liz Murrill: “No excuse for this”
Attorney General Liz Murrill released a fiery statement:

"Someone clearly dropped the ball, and there’s no excuse for this. I’m in communication with Troop NOLA and State Police Superintendent Colonel
Hodges. It’s all hands on deck, AG Murrill said in an official statement.

"The first priority in any escape must be the immediate capture of the
inmates and coordination with state and local law enforcement — but that
effort cannot come at the expense of timely notification to the public,
which is also critical to keeping communities safe. My office will do
whatever it takes to determine how this happened and make sure that it
won’t happen again. I am calling for a full investigation - This is beyond unacceptable, and once these offenders are back in custody, there must be
    real accountability.”

State Rep: 'Alarming on every level'
Rep. Alonzo Knox added that the scale of the escape raises serious red
    flags about jail security.

"I am deeply concerned and frankly alarmed by the news that 11 inmates
managed to escape from the Orleans Parish jail. This is not something we
hear often, and certainly not on this scale. It raises serious questions
about security and oversight, as it appears to have been a carefully coordinated effort," said Rep. Knox.

"I am relieved to learn that one of the escapees was captured in the
French Quarter, but it is beyond troubling that others, some of whom may
be violent, could be moving freely among us. I strongly urge the public to remain vigilant. If you have any information about the whereabouts of
these escaped inmates, please report it to law enforcement immediately.
Public safety must be our top priority."

    What you can do
Authorities say if you see something suspicious or have any info about the escapees, call Crime Stoppers at 504-822-1111. You can also submit tips to fbi.gov/neworleansfugitives, where a reward is now being offered.
