  • Ethernet speeds - testing to Thinkbroadband

    Having had Ethernet issues (see previous) I decided to test my connection.
    I should be able to get 300 Mb/sec allegedly from my Virgin Media cable.

    On my new Dell XPS I can get 271 Mb/sec bursting to 283.
    On my older desktop I can get 167 Mb/sec bursting to 178.

    The Dell is using an external adapter on a USB C (Thunderbolt) port.
    The desktop is using the port on the motherboard.

    As an additional check I tried a USB Gigabit adapter on USB 3.1 on the
    desktop but this was even slower.

    All running through the same 4 port Gigabit hub connected to the Gigabit
    switch under the stairs.

    I think that the motherboard port should be able to hit Gigabit speeds,
    but this is the one which was being picky over negotiating Gigabit speeds
    a few days back.

    I'm now wondering if I should try a Gigabit Ethernet card as an
    alternative just to see if it is the motherboard port.
    When I have time of course.

    I will also test with other systems as and when I get the chance.

    What speed do you get direct between the laptop and desktop?
