PERFIDE ALBION: "Perfidious Albion" is a pejorative phrase used within
the context of international relations diplomacy to refer to acts of diplomatic slights, duplicity, treachery and hence infidelity (with
respect to perceived promises made to or alliances formed with other
nation states) by monarchs or governments of the United Kingdom (or
Great Britain prior to 1801, or England prior to 1707) in their pursuit
of self-interest. Perfidious means not keeping one's faith or word (from
the Latin word perfidia), while Albion is an ancient and now poetic name
for Great Britain.

YOUTUBE: "THE FOGGY DEW - SINÉAD O’CONNOR & THE CHIEFTAINS, 1995"
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keWnPZOd2cw>
Another song called "Foggy Dew" was written by Fr (later Canon) Charles O’Neill (1887–1963) from Portglenone, County Antrim, a priest of the Diocese of Down and Connor who was then a curate at St. Peter's
Cathedral, Belfast, and later in life was parish priest of Kilcoo and
later Newcastle, County Down. O'Neill was ordained in St. Patrick's
College, Maynooth in 1912. The music is from a manuscript that was in possession of Kathleen Dallat, sister of Michael Dallat of Ballycastle.
That manuscript gives Carl Hardebeck as the arranger. It is the same air
as the traditional love song The Moorlough Shore.
"The Foggy Dew" is a product of the political situation in Ireland in
the aftermath of the Easter Rising and World War I.
Approximately 210,000 Irishmen joined up and served in the British
forces during the war. This created mixed feelings for many Irish
people, particularly for those with nationalist sympathies. While they broadly supported the British war effort, they also felt that one of the moral justifications for the war, "the freedom of small nations" like
Belgium and Serbia, should also be applied to Ireland, which at that
time was under British rule.
The 1915 Battle of Gallipoli, in which many young and mainly
middle-class Irishmen who had joined up in response to John Redmond's
call were killed, turned many people against the war.
In 1916, Irish patriots led by James Connolly and Patrick Pearse, taking advantage of Britain being preoccupied by World War I, seized some of
the major buildings in Dublin including the General Post Office, while
others came out in Ashbourne and Galway in the Easter Rising.
The brutal response to the Rising, and the execution of its leaders that followed, marked a turning point for many Irish people. The public
revulsion at the executions added to the growing sense of alienation
from the British government.
Canon O'Neill reflected this alienation when he wrote The Foggy Dew commemorating the few hundred brave men who had risen out against what
was then the most powerful empire in the world. In 1919, he attended the first sitting of the new Irish Parliament, Dáil. The names of the
elected members were called out, but many were absent. Their names were answered by the reply faoi ghlas ag na Gaill – "locked up by the English".
These events had a profound effect on O'Neill and some time after this
he wrote The Foggy Dew telling the story of the Easter Rising and
reflecting the thoughts of many Irish people at the time who now
believed that the Irishmen who fought for Britain during the war should
have stayed home and fought for Irish independence instead.
O'Neill sums up this feeling in the line, "Twas far better to die ‘neath
an Irish sky / Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar". <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foggy_Dew_(Irish_songs)>

On 19 AUGUST 1853 the Legislative Council appointed a select committee
to draft a constitution, which was passed by the Council on 31 OCTOBER
1855. By JANUARY 1855, the first Governor of Tasmania, Sir Henry Fox
Young had been appointed. The constitution, calling for a new bicameral parliament received royal assent from Queen Victoria on 1 MAY 1855. On

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foggy_Dew_(Irish_songs)>

had became a byword for horror in England because of the severity of its convict settlements such as Macquarie Harbour and Port Arthur. When the island became a self-governing colony in 1855, one of the first acts of
the new legislature was to change its name.
With the passing of the Australian Constitutions Act 1850, Van Diemen's
Land (along with New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria,
and Western Australia) was granted responsible self-government with its
own elected representative and parliament. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Diemen%27s_Land>
On
21 JULY 1855, the Privy Council granted the application to change the colony's name from "Van Diemen's Land" to "Tasmania", and on 24 OCTOBER
1855, a tumultuous crowd gathered in Hobart to hear that the Tasmanian Constitution Act had been granted royal assent.
On 8 FEBRUARY 1856, the old Legislative Council met for the last time,
and between September and OCTOBER, elections were held across the state
for the new Tasmanian Legislative Council, and Tasmanian House of Assembly.
On 1 NOVEMBER 1856, Governor Sir Henry Fox Young proclaimed former
British Army officer, William Champ as the first Premier of Tasmania,
and the new bicameral parliament met for the first time on 2 DECEMBER
1856, marking the beginning of self-government for the Colony of Tasmania.
Tasmania raised a local defence force and total 28 officers and 822
other ranks were sent from the colony which eventually played a
significant role in the SECOND BOER WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA, and Tasmanian soldiers in that conflict won the FIRST TWO VICTORIA CROSSES WON BY AUSTRALIANS. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_of_Tasmania>

With the passing of the Australian Constitutions Act 1850, Van
Diemen's Land (along with New South Wales, Queensland, South
Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia) was granted responsible
self-government with its own elected representative and parliament. On
1 JANUARY 1856, the colony's name was officially changed from Van
Diemen's Land to Tasmania and therefore ceased to be a DUTCH DOMINION
by misadventure as ambiguous edict establishing COOK's discovery and
TERRA INCOGNITA landing instructions given to the FIRST FLEET of 1788.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Constitutions_Act_1850>
Van Diemen's Land was the colonial name of the island of Tasmania used
by the British during the European exploration and colonisation of
Australia in the 19th century. The island was previously discovered
and named by the Dutch in 1642. Explorer Abel Tasman discovered the
island, working under the sponsorship of Anthony van Diemen, the
Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The British retained the
name when they established a settlement in 1803 before it became
independent from the Colony of New South Wales on #205 / #298 - 3
DECEMBER 1825. Its penal colonies became notorious destinations for
the transportation of convicts due to the harsh environment, isolation
and reputation for being inescapable.
The name was changed to Tasmania in 1856 to disassociate the island
from its convict past and to honour its discoverer, Abel Tasman. The
old name had became a byword for horror in England because of the
severity of its convict settlements such as Macquarie Harbour and Port
Arthur. When the island became a self-governing colony in 1855, one of
the first acts of the new legislature was to change its name.
With the passing of the Australian Constitutions Act 1850, Van
Diemen's Land (along with New South Wales, Queensland, South
Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia) was granted responsible
self-government with its own elected representative and parliament.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Diemen%27s_Land>
On 19 AUGUST 1853 the Legislative Council appointed a select committee
to draft a constitution, which was passed by the Council on 31 OCTOBER
1855. By JANUARY 1855, the first Governor of Tasmania, Sir Henry Fox
Young had been appointed. The constitution, calling for a new
bicameral parliament received royal assent from Queen Victoria on 1
MAY 1855. On 21 JULY 1855, the Privy Council granted the application
to change the colony's name from "Van Diemen's Land" to "Tasmania",
and on 24 OCTOBER 1855, a tumultuous crowd gathered in Hobart to hear
that the Tasmanian Constitution Act had been granted royal assent.
On 8 FEBRUARY 1856, the old Legislative Council met for the last time,
and between September and OCTOBER, elections were held across the
state for the new Tasmanian Legislative Council, and Tasmanian House
of Assembly.
On 1 NOVEMBER 1856, Governor Sir Henry Fox Young proclaimed former
British Army officer, William Champ as the first Premier of Tasmania,
and the new bicameral parliament met for the first time on 2 DECEMBER
1856, marking the beginning of self-government for the Colony of
Tasmania.
Tasmania raised a local defence force and total 28 officers and 822
other ranks were sent from the colony which eventually played a
significant role in the SECOND BOER WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA, and Tasmanian
soldiers in that conflict won the FIRST TWO VICTORIA CROSSES WON BY
AUSTRALIANS. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_of_Tasmania>

PERFIDE ALBION: "Perfidious Albion" is a pejorative phrase used within
the context of international relations diplomacy to refer to acts of
diplomatic slights, duplicity, treachery and hence infidelity (with
respect to perceived promises made to or alliances formed with other
nation states) by monarchs or governments of the United Kingdom (or
Great Britain prior to 1801, or England prior to 1707) in their
pursuit of self-interest. Perfidious means not keeping one's faith or
word (from the Latin word perfidia), while Albion is an ancient and
now poetic name for Great Britain.

YOUTUBE: "THE FOGGY DEW - SINÉAD O’CONNOR & THE CHIEFTAINS, 1995"
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keWnPZOd2cw>
Another song called "Foggy Dew" was written by Fr (later Canon)
Charles O’Neill (1887–1963) from Portglenone, County Antrim, a priest
of the Diocese of Down and Connor who was then a curate at St. Peter's
Cathedral, Belfast, and later in life was parish priest of Kilcoo and
later Newcastle, County Down. O'Neill was ordained in St. Patrick's
College, Maynooth in 1912. The music is from a manuscript that was in
possession of Kathleen Dallat, sister of Michael Dallat of
Ballycastle. That manuscript gives Carl Hardebeck as the arranger. It
is the same air as the traditional love song The Moorlough Shore.
While they
broadly supported the British war effort, they also felt that one of
the moral justifications for the war, "the freedom of small nations"
like Belgium and Serbia, should also be applied to Ireland, which at
that time was under British rule.
The 1915 Battle of Gallipoli, in which many young and mainly
middle-class Irishmen who had joined up in response to John Redmond's
call were killed, turned many people against the war.
In 1916, Irish patriots led by James Connolly and Patrick Pearse,
taking advantage of Britain being preoccupied by World War I, seized
some of the major buildings in Dublin including the General Post
Office, while others came out in Ashbourne and Galway in the Easter
Rising.
The brutal response to the Rising, and the execution of its leaders
that followed, marked a turning point for many Irish people. The
public revulsion at the executions added to the growing sense of
alienation from the British government.
Canon O'Neill reflected this alienation when he wrote The Foggy Dew
commemorating the few hundred brave men who had risen out against what
was then the most powerful empire in the world. In 1919, he attended
the first sitting of the new Irish Parliament, Dáil. The names of the
elected members were called out, but many were absent. Their names
were answered by the reply faoi ghlas ag na Gaill – "locked up by the
English".
These events had a profound effect on O'Neill and some time after this
he wrote The Foggy Dew telling the story of the Easter Rising and
reflecting the thoughts of many Irish people at the time who now
believed that the Irishmen who fought for Britain during the war
should have stayed home and fought for Irish independence instead.
O'Neill sums up this feeling in the line, "Twas far better to die
‘neath an Irish sky / Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar".
