Not at all. My wife's iPhone provides entirely adequate voice
instructions about which lane to be in next turn and and how far to
the next waypoint. It even recalculates if it finds a traffic jam

Which app does she use for navigation? Many people recommend Waze. I'm
Google's basic map and routing functionality suffices for us. It
includes real time traffic updates and shows jams ahead. We have it
set to only recalculate the route if >15 minutes can be saved.

Waze is that sometimes the GPS seems to stop and the vehicle doesn't
move on the map. I think others have noticed this with Waze.
That is most likely a problem with the GPS constellation above you
(particularly in cities with many high buildings). It needs to see at
least 4 and preferably 5 satellites to get a reliable position to 10m.
It is amazing that they can now do this routinely! It involves
precision time measurements to 30ns resolution to be that accurate.

find that if I switch to a different navigation app, that one works.
It is usually quite transient and should self correct inside a couple of minutes. You can get some of the e-Trac ones for walking to show you how
many satellites and an estimate of accuracy on some models. New GPS satellites will cross the sky every 5 minutes or so.
Every single GPS I've used shows you how many satellites and where they are. What rubbish are you using?
Again it uses a "nearby" heuristic to snap you onto a footpath if at all possible.
You use paths? Off the beaten track is a thing you know.
Actually, another problem I've noticed is that the display can lag
behind real life, so that you sometimes have to guess which road to take
on a roundabout and then Waze tells you if you were right.
Google maps seems to be pretty good on real time. Only snag is that it
isn't prescient. Got caught by an M1 closure due to a police incident
just past the last junction where we could have exited.
A police incident? You mean one of those problems caused by the police? It takes 5 minutes to photo the accident then move the cars out of the way of thousands of late for work road users.
